DISCIPLE CHILDREN: Raising a Generation That Speaks for Jesus
Key Text: Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2:17; Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Matthew 28:19–20
God’s redemptive plan has never excluded children. From Eden to the New Earth, the Lord has consistently revealed His desire to raise a witnessing people across generations. Discipling children is not a supplementary ministry of the church—it is central to the mission of God.
SECTION 1: God’s Spirit Is Promised to Children
Scriptural Foundation: Joel 2:28–29; Acts 2:17
A. The Promise Is Universal Within the Covenant
- God declares that He will pour out His Spirit upon “all flesh.”
- The promise explicitly includes sons and daughters.
- Age, gender, or social status does not limit the Spirit’s work.
“The promise of the Holy Spirit is not confined to any age or race.”
—Ellen G. White

In many Adventist homes in Isona, children memorize Sabbath School memory verses weekly. Often, a child will correct an adult gently by quoting Scripture learned in class. That is evidence that the Spirit is already at work in young hearts, not waiting for adulthood to begin His ministry.
B. The Result Is Verbal Witness
- “They shall prophesy” refers to Spirit-empowered speech.
- In Scripture, prophecy includes declaring God’s truth faithfully.
- Children are included in God’s plan to speak His word publicly.
“Children may be trained to be missionaries for God.”
—Ellen G. White

During Children’s Sabbath, a Primary child boldly recites a Bible promise before the congregation. That simple act becomes a sermon in itself, reminding the church that God still speaks through the mouths of the young.
SECTION 2: Discipling Children Is a Divine Command
Scriptural Foundation: Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Proverbs 22:6
A. Faith Must Be Intentionally Taught
- God commands parents to teach His words diligently to their children.
- Instruction is to be continual—at home, on the road, morning and night.
- Spiritual formation is deliberate, not accidental.
“The work of parents underlies every other.”
—Ellen G. White
Illustration:
A mother in Isona sets aside Friday evenings to prepare for Sabbath with her children—reviewing the lesson, praying together, and singing hymns. That routine shapes faith more deeply than any occasional sermon.
B. Early Training Shapes Lifelong Witness
- Spiritual habits formed early become anchors in adulthood.
- God values early consecration.
“It is far easier to mold the character in childhood than to reform it in later years.”
—Ellen G. White

Many Adventist leaders testify that their first call to ministry began in childhood Pathfinder meetings or family worship. What is planted early often bears fruit later.
SECTION 3: Jesus Actively Welcomes Children as Disciples
Scriptural Foundation: Matthew 19:14; Mark 10:13–16
A. Jesus Affirms Children as Kingdom Citizens
- Jesus rebuked those who tried to keep children away.
- He declared the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
“In the children who were brought to Him, Jesus saw men and women who should be heirs of His grace and subjects of His kingdom.”
—Ellen G. White
Illustration:
When a child asks to be baptized or participate in church ministry, it reflects Christ’s invitation—not presumption. The church must discern carefully, not dismiss quickly.
B. Christ Blesses Before They Fully Understand
- Jesus blessed children before intellectual maturity.
- Relationship precedes explanation.
Illustration:
A child may not yet explain justification by faith, but they know how to trust Jesus. That trust is the seed of lifelong discipleship.
SECTION 4: A Trained Generation Will Finish the Work
Scriptural Foundation: Psalms 78:4–7; Matthew 24:14
A. Faith Must Be Transmitted Across Generations
- God commands each generation to tell His works to the next.
- Witness is inherited through teaching and example.
“With such an army of workers as our youth, rightly trained, might furnish, how soon the message of a crucified, risen, and soon-coming Savior might be carried to the whole world.”
—Ellen G. White
Illustration:
When children lead out in scripture reading, music, and outreach, the church is not weakening its mission—it is securing its future.
B. The Mission Will Be Finished by a Prepared People
- God’s end-time work includes young voices.
- Children trained today become witnesses tomorrow.
Illustration:
The child who hands out tracts today may preach the Three Angels’ Messages tomorrow.
CONCLUSION: A Call to the Church
Discipling children is not optional. It is obedience. When the church invests in children, it partners with heaven to raise a generation that will speak for Jesus, live for His glory, and help finish His work on earth.
