Equal Opportunity Life
Equal Opportunity Life — Five and Five
A Christ-centered exposition of Matthew 25:1–5
Introduction
Life gives opportunities to many, but not everyone uses them the same way. In the parable of the ten virgins Jesus explains that though the invitation is equal, preparation differs. This message is not about ability or position — it is about a living relationship with Christ, the Bridegroom.
Read: Matthew 25:1–5
I. Equal Invitation From Christ to All (Matthew 25:1)
"Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins..." — ten were invited. Ten equals an invitation without partiality.
Key scriptures: Titus 2:11; Acts 10:34; Revelation 22:17.
A university announced 10 full scholarships open to anyone. The opportunity was equal, but only those who followed the instructions and acted entered. God’s invitation is equal; the response is not always the same.
II. Outward Appearance vs. Inner Reality (Matthew 25:2–4)
Five were wise and five were foolish. Outwardly they looked the same, yet inwardly they were different. The difference was oil — the sign of the Holy Spirit and personal devotion.
Key scriptures: 1 Samuel 16:7; Zechariah 4:1–6; 2 Timothy 3:5; Romans 8:9.
Two people owned the same smartphone. One had 1% battery; the other was fully charged. During an emergency, only one phone worked. The look was the same; the inner power made the difference.
III. Both Groups Slept — Human Weakness vs. Readiness (Matthew 25:5)
"They all slumbered and slept." Even the wise grow tired — human weakness is real. The issue is not sleep but whether we prepared before sleeping.
Key scriptures: Psalms 103:14; Habakkuk 2:3; Mark 14:37–42.
Two drivers planned an overnight trip. One serviced his car and checked the brakes before sleeping; the other postponed servicing. At midnight, only the serviced car was ready. Preparation matters.
IV. The Midnight Cry Exposes True Spiritual Condition (Matthew 25:6)
The midnight cry represents crisis — the kind that exposes what we have carried all along. The foolish asked to borrow oil; you cannot borrow genuine relationship with Christ.
Key scriptures: Proverbs 24:10; 1 Corinthians 3:13; Ezekiel 18:20; Matthew 7:21–23.
When the lights went out, neighbors grabbed torches. Some worked; others had dead batteries. In the dark, the prepared were obvious; batteries could not be borrowed from closed shops. Crisis reveals preparation.
V. Christ the Bridegroom — The Center of the Parable (Matthew 25:10)
The story points to Christ. The wise entered the wedding with the Bridegroom. Our focus must be on knowing Jesus, not comparing lamps.
Key scriptures: John 3:29; Revelation 19:7; John 17:3; John 14:16–17.
At a wedding the bride’s attention is on one person — her groom. She doesn’t compare herself to bridesmaids; she prepares for the groom alone. So must we focus on Christ.
VI. Final Appeal — Daily Preparedness Through Christ Alone
Being ready is not about past achievements or positions. It is about daily communion and dependence on Jesus, who provides the oil — the Holy Spirit.
Key scriptures: John 15:4–5; Matthew 26:41; Luke 11:13; Psalms 18:28.
A man owned an expensive phone and power bank but forgot to charge both one day. When he needed them, they were dead. Power must be maintained by daily connection; spiritual life is the same.
Conclusion
Ten virgins. Five and five. Equal invitation, different outcomes. The difference is relationship with Christ and daily filling with the Holy Spirit. Ask yourself:
- Do I know Christ personally, or only about Him?
- Is my lamp powered by His Spirit?
- Am I preparing today for the Bridegroom’s coming?
