Matthew 10:41–42 Explained: True Prophets, Righteous Men, and the Cup of Cold Water

Introduction

In Matthew 10:41–42, Jesus assures His disciples that whoever receives a prophet or a righteous person shares in their reward (v.41), and that even the smallest kindness—like giving a cup of cold water in His name—will not go unrewarded (v.42). These verses reveal how God values sincere love, discernment, and practical support for His people.

1) Receiving a Prophet and a Righteous Man (Matthew 10:41)

To “receive” means to welcome, honor, and support God’s true servants. A righteous person is known by:

“He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.”Matthew 10:41 (KJV)

Illustration – Elijah and the Widow (1 Kings 17:8–16)

During a famine, the widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and oil left. Yet she received Elijah and fed him first. God honored her small act of obedience: her flour and oil did not run out until the famine ended.

Lesson: Supporting a true servant of God brings divine reward, even when what you give seems small.

2) Warning: Not All Are True Prophets

Jesus warned about false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15). We discern by:

“If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.”2 John 1:10

Lesson: Titles don’t authenticate a calling. Test by Scripture and fruit before you “receive.”

3) The Cup of Cold Water (Matthew 10:42)

In the Middle Eastern climate, cold water represented refreshment and real relief. Jesus used it to symbolize the smallest genuine act of kindness.

“And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple… he shall in no wise lose his reward.”Matthew 10:42 (KJV)

Lesson: God values the motive and the heart more than the size of the act.

Illustration – Mama Grace and the Missionaries (Modern African Village)

A poor widow, Mama Grace, gave her only cool water and a piece of roasted corn to two exhausted missionaries. Years later, one returned as a pastor and helped start a school and clinic in her village. Her small kindness became a seed of blessing for generations.

Lesson: A small act can multiply beyond what we imagine.

4) What If It’s Cold Weather?

The principle is about timely kindness, not temperature. In cold weather, the “cup of cold water” might be a warm drink, clothing, shelter, or spiritual encouragement (John 7:37). The point is to meet the real need at the right time.

5) Practical Applications Today

  • Hospitality: Welcome and support ministers, missionaries, and fellow believers (meals, transport fare, data/airtime, rest).
  • Helping the needy: Food, clothing, medicine, school support, or transport.
  • Encouragement: A call, prayer, text, or a listening ear (Proverbs 25:25).
  • Workplace/School: Share knowledge, help with tasks, defend the treated-unfairly.
  • Evangelism: Support gospel work with “little” things that matter.

Illustration – The Student’s Sandwich (Modern City)

A student shared half his sandwich and a bottle of water with a homeless man at the campus gate. Years later, starting a new job, he discovered the school principal was that same man—now restored and given a second chance at life.

Lesson: Small, consistent kindness can transform lives in unseen ways.

Conclusion

God notices and rewards even the smallest acts done in Jesus’ name. Receiving and supporting true servants makes us share in their reward. A “cup of cold water” today may be food, shelter, prayer, or encouragement—whatever meets the present need. Nothing done for Christ is ever wasted.

Take-Home Points

  1. Not all prophets are true—use biblical discernment.
  2. Support true servants of God and share in their reward.
  3. “Cold water” means any timely, refreshing act of kindness.
  4. God rewards even the smallest deeds done in His name.
