1) Introduction: Faith Thinks
God never asks us to switch off our minds to follow Him. Biblical faith is not blind; it is intelligent trust. The Lord invites us to reason with Him (Isaiah 1:18) and calls us to seek wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 4:7). The Holy Spirit does not bypass our thinking—He renews it (Romans 12:2).
Romans 12:2 — “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
2) Christ, the Wisdom of God
At the center of wise living is not a technique but a Person: Jesus Christ. Scripture calls Him “the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24), and says in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).
- We don’t just ask, “What is wise?” We ask, “What looks like Jesus?”
- Wisdom is shaped by the cross—humble, truthful, loving, and obedient (Philippians 2:5–8).
3) Scripture Foundation for Sanctified Reason
- Proverbs 2:6 — “The LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
- James 1:5 — God gives wisdom generously to those who ask in faith.
- Luke 14:28 — Count the cost; plan before acting.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21 — “Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
- Proverbs 15:22 — Purposes are established by a multitude of counselors.
- Isaiah 8:20 — Everything must align with God’s Word.
Summary: The Bible commands prayerful dependence on God, rigorous testing of ideas, wise planning, and accountability—this is common sense made holy.
4) Why Believers Still Make Unwise Choices
- Process: Sanctification is ongoing; we must keep yielding to the Spirit (John 16:13; Galatians 5:16).
- Application Gap: Hearing truth ≠ doing truth (James 1:22).
- Emotions & Bias: Anger, fear, pride can cloud judgment (Proverbs 14:29; Jeremiah 17:9).
- Isolation: Neglecting godly counsel leads to blind spots (Proverbs 12:15; 15:22).
5) Bible Case Studies
Moses: Anger Over Reason (Numbers 20:7–12)
Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded. Lesson: Emotion without submission can sabotage wise obedience.
Jehoshaphat: Unwise Alliances (2 Chronicles 18–20)
A godly king entangled himself with wicked partners. Lesson: Partnerships shape outcomes—seek counsel and guard your yoke (2 Corinthians 6:14).
Peter: Impulsive Words (Matthew 16:21–23)
Peter rebuked Jesus, misunderstanding God’s plan. Lesson: Love must be paired with understanding and humility.
Jonah: Running from God (Jonah 1)
Knowing God’s call, he sailed the other way. Lesson: Disobedience is never logical; you can’t outrun God.
Galatians: Starting in the Spirit, Switching to Flesh (Galatians 3:1–3)
They drifted to legalism. Lesson: Consistency—continue in the grace by which you began.
6) A 7-Step Framework for Christ-Centered Decisions
- Pause: Refuse hurry (Proverbs 19:2).
- Pray: Ask for wisdom (James 1:5).
- Open the Word: Does this align with Scripture? (Isaiah 8:20).
- Seek Counsel: Invite mature believers to speak in (Proverbs 15:22).
- Count the Cost: Consider consequences (Luke 14:28–30).
- Check Motives: What’s driving me—fear, pride, greed, love? (Jeremiah 17:9; 1 Corinthians 13:4–7).
- Look for Peace: Let the peace of Christ arbitrate (Colossians 3:15).
Discernment Grid: If a decision cannot pass through prayer, Scripture, counsel, cost-counting, motive check, and Christ’s peace, it’s usually wise to wait.
7) Applications for Daily Life
- Relationships: Choose partners and friends who move you toward Christ (Proverbs 13:20).
- Finances & Work: Budget, avoid debt traps, be diligent (Proverbs 6:6–8; 22:7).
- Conflict: Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger (James 1:19–20).
- Calling: Obey the light you have now; God steers moving vessels (Psalms 119:105).
- Digital Life: Test what you consume; pursue what is true, honorable, and pure (Philippians 4:8).
8) Gospel Appeal
True wisdom begins with the fear of the LORD (Proverbs 9:10) and is revealed fully in Jesus Christ, crucified and risen. We don’t merely try harder to be sensible; we come to Christ to be made new. Receive His forgiveness, submit to His lordship, and walk by His Spirit—this is wisdom’s path.
9) Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the wisdom of God. Renew my mind by Your Spirit. Teach me to think with Scripture, to seek counsel, to count the cost, and to act in love. Let Your peace rule my heart and Your cross shape my choices. Amen.
10) Small Group / Family Discussion
- Where have I confused zeal with wisdom? What changed when I slowed down to pray and think?
- Which step of the 7-step framework do I usually skip? Why?
- Which case study (Moses, Peter, Jehoshaphat, Jonah, Galatians) mirrors my current challenge?
- Who are my “multitude of counselors” this season? How will I invite their input?
