Why we are praying: a former pastor and gospel singer has pleaded guilty and been sentenced for sexually assaulting a child. This crime wounds the vulnerable, damages trust in ministry, fractures families and communities, and calls us to respond in prayer for victims, justice, repentance and the salvation of all involved.

Short summary (what happened — recent update)

In a recent case reported in regional and Christian news outlets, Kevin Mills — described in those reports as a former associate pastor and gospel singer with ties to Portage la Prairie and with activities in the Rochester / Thurston County area — pleaded guilty to charges alleging sexual assault of a child and has since been sentenced in Thurston County Superior Court. The sentencing occurred in late October; the reports name October 24 as the sentencing date. This case followed a prior criminal filing in which Mills faced serious child-sex-abuse charges.

About Kevin Mills — background and public profile

According to published reporting, Mills has been publicly identified as a man with prior ties to church ministry and gospel music circles. Local reporting and Christian outlets refer to him as a former associate pastor and gospel singer connected to Portage la Prairie (Canada) and also report activity or residence connected to Rochester / Thurston County in Washington state. Before this guilty plea, Mills was publicly accused and charged in court filings related to the sexual assault of a child; those charges were reported in local newspapers and later resolved by his guilty plea. These facts are drawn from court reporting and news coverage.

Comprehensive Timeline (key dates and developments)

Prior reporting of charges (local press): Local coverage previously reported charges alleging first-degree sexual assault of a child and associated counts tied to Mills, dating from earlier court filings and coverage in regional papers.

Guilty plea: Reporting indicates Mills pleaded guilty to charges of sexually assaulting a child; a news item places the plea earlier in the year with formal reports of the guilty plea appearing in the summer months (press reports reference a July court event).

Sentencing: Mills was sentenced on October 24 in Thurston County Superior Court, with several outlets reporting on the sentencing and the resulting prison term (regional Christian and secular outlets published coverage in late October).

Ongoing community response: Local communities, church congregations and online Christian reporting have shared updates, reactions and calls for prayer. This case has generated both grief and calls for accountability given the accused’s prior church involvement.

Why we must pray — clear and specific reasons

  • For the victim(s) — for physical and emotional healing, protection, restoration and long-term counselling. Sexual abuse of a child has deep, lifelong impact and the survivor needs our intercession.
  • For justice to be done — that courts, prosecutors and community supports would act fairly and that the sentence and supervision protect children going forward.
  • For repentance and true transformation — even while holding wrongdoers accountable, Scripture calls believers to pray for the lost and for the possibility of genuine, Spirit-led repentance.
  • For families and congregations affected — families, church members, and neighbours can be traumatised; they need compassion, pastoral care and wise support.
  • For the reputation of Christ and the Church — abuse by someone known in ministry wounds the body of Christ; pray that the Church would respond with justice, humility and radical care for victims.
  • For community healing and preventive measures — pray that congregations and organizations will strengthen safeguards, screening, child protection policies and transparent accountability.

Scriptural grounding for this prayer response

“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” — Isaiah 1:17

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” — Proverbs 31:8

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

Detailed reasons why prayer should target both justice and salvation

The Christian response must hold both tension and balance: we must call for justice and protection of the vulnerable while praying for the spiritual condition of every person involved. When someone in ministry is accused and convicted of grave sin, it both exposes further harm and offers an urgent opportunity for the Gospel to confront sin, call for repentance, and allow Christ-centered restoration where possible. Prayer for salvation does not erase accountability — rather it entrusts the ultimate transformation to Christ and asks God to do what human institutions cannot: change hearts and heal souls.

Extensive background on key persons and community impact

Kevin Mills — public profile: News reporting identifies Mills as a former associate pastor and gospel singer who had ties to Portage la Prairie in Canada and was later connected with Rochester/Thurston County areas. Coverage describes how a person once known in ministry circles is now convicted for sexual assault of a child. The fall of a ministry figure increases the pain because people expected pastoral care and protection, not harm.

Victims & families: Families bear long-term trauma. The community response includes a mixture of grief, calls for prayer, demands for safety reforms in churches, and pastoral outreach to survivors. Many stories like this reveal the need for better trauma-informed pastoral care, mandatory reporting, and robust child-safeguarding policies.

What you can do now

  1. Pray regularly for the victim(s) and their family — for protection, trauma healing, wise counselling and restoration.
  2. Pray for convict(s) — that they would face consequences, repent, and experience true change through Christ (without minimizing the need for justice and supervision).
  3. Support local survivor ministries — donate or volunteer to organisations that help abused children and families.
  4. Ask your church to review and strengthen child protection policies and to provide pastoral care to survivors.
  5. Raise awareness — calmly and biblically call for justice and systemic change where appropriate, while guarding privacy and the dignity of victims.

    Heavenly Father,

We come before You heavy of heart. You are near to the brokenhearted and You bind up their wounds. We pray first for the child who was harmed — for healing of body, mind and spirit. Bring restoration where there has been injury. Raise up wise caregivers, counsellors, and protective supports to walk with this child and their family in the days and years ahead. Comfort them, Lord, and restore what the enemy sought to steal. Amen.

We pray for justice: grant discernment and courage to those whose role it is to protect children, to investigators and courts, that truth might be uncovered and that protections will be firmly put in place. Let sentences and monitoring be exercised in ways that protect future vulnerable ones.

We also pray for Kevin Mills by name: Lord, we do not excuse sin—sin must be acknowledged and must face consequence—yet You are the God who transforms sinners through repentance. Pierce his heart; bring conviction that leads to true and lasting repentance. We ask for salvation for him, and that if he turns to You, his life might ultimately point others away from harm. Help him to confess, repair where possible, and accept the consequences he must face. Bring holy sorrow that produces repentance. Amen.

Lord, we ask for healing across every impacted household, church and neighbourhood. Where trust has been broken, teach us to walk in humility, to make amends, and to be instruments of justice and mercy. Equip Your Church to be a safe refuge for the vulnerable rather than a place where harm is hidden.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” — Psalms 89:14

In Jesus’ name we pray for truth, for protection of children, for justice, and for salvation. Amen.
