This is an urgent call for prayer. Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified and is forecast to strike Jamaica, then move toward eastern Cuba and parts of Hispaniola — bringing catastrophic winds, storm surge and historic rainfall. We ask the global church to pray for protection, rescue, physical provision, spiritual salvation, and the long road of recovery ahead.

Latest situation (highlights): Melissa has strengthened rapidly to a major hurricane and is forecast to bring life-threatening rainfall, destructive winds, and storm surge to Jamaica and neighboring islands. 1

Quick summary — why this needs worldwide prayer

  • Rapid intensification: Melissa has grown quickly into a Category 4 (and may strengthen further), raising the risk of catastrophic damage. 2
  • Jamaica in the direct path: Hurricane warnings are in effect for Jamaica; officials warn of multi-day impacts including flood, landslides and prolonged outages. 3
  • Cuba & Guantánamo Bay: Eastern Cuba is expected to feel major impacts as the storm tracks west–northwest; the U.S. Navy ordered evacuation of non-essential families at Guantánamo Bay. 4
  • Humanitarian vulnerability: Many coastal and mountainous communities in Jamaica, Haiti and parts of Cuba face extreme flash-flood and landslide risk; Haiti is already suffering deadly impacts in recent days. 5

Background & context — the science and the people

What meteorologists are saying

The U.S. National Hurricane Center and multiple international outlets report that Melissa underwent extreme rapid intensification. Forecasters warn of dangerously slow forward motion, which increases rainfall totals and the potential for catastrophic flooding and prolonged destructive conditions over Jamaica and southern Hispaniola before the storm moves toward eastern Cuba and the Bahamas. 6

Why Jamaica is especially vulnerable

Jamaica's southern and central parishes include steep terrain and river valleys where torrential rainfall can quickly trigger landslides and flash floods. Many communities live in flood-prone areas or near fragile coastal infrastructure; prolonged outages would affect hospitals, water treatment, and communications. Government leaders have activated shelters and urged residents in low-lying areas to seek safety. 7

About key public leaders to pray for

  • Prime Minister Andrew Holness (Jamaica): as national leader he is coordinating preparedness and appeals; pray for wisdom, courage, and for his influence to help vulnerable people move to safety.
  • President Miguel Díaz-Canel (Cuba): Cuba’s leadership will be grappling with evacuations, energy vulnerabilities, and relief logistics — pray for clear communication and rapid mobilization of resources. 9
  • Local responders & church leaders: fire, police, coast guard, volunteers, and gospel workers who enter affected communities to rescue and comfort — pray for protection and provision. (See sources below for evacuation orders and shelter activations.) 10

Happening now — most important recent facts

• Melissa is producing extremely strong winds and bands of torrential rain; forecasts indicate the possibility of 15–40 inches of rain in places — amounts that would trigger catastrophic flash floods and landslides. 11

• Jamaica has activated more than 600 shelters and urged evacuations for low-lying communities; airports in some areas have closed or prepared for shutdowns as the storm approaches. 12

• Cuba is bracing the eastern provinces; the U.S. Navy ordered evacuation of non-essential personnel and families at Guantánamo Bay as a precaution. Many Cuban provinces face heightened vulnerability due to recent energy and supply challenges that would complicate response and recovery. 13

• Haiti and the Dominican Republic have already seen deadly rains and flooding in recent days from Melissa’s outer bands; the humanitarian situation in parts of Hispaniola is fragile and could worsen. 14

Multiple reasons to pray — practical, spiritual and long-term

  1. Immediate physical protection: Pray for safety for families in low-lying zones, for those at sea, and for those who cannot relocate quickly.
  2. Effective emergency response: Pray for first responders, medical teams, shelter managers, and volunteers — for stamina, clarity, and supplies.
  3. Rescue & reunification: For speedy rescue of trapped persons, and for comfort and reconnection of separated families and children.
  4. Provision for basic needs: For food, clean water, shelter, fuel, medical care, and communications during and after the storm.
  5. Infrastructure & utilities: For protection of hospitals, water systems, and power grids — and for fast restoration where damage occurs (Cuba’s recent energy issues make this especially urgent). 15
  6. Spiritual harvest & salvation: Pray that amid crisis hearts will turn to Jesus — that shelters and relief points become opportunities for the gospel, consolation, and deeper faith.
  7. Long-term recovery: For rebuilding efforts that are wise, equitable, and that keep the needs of the poorest first in mind.
  8. Political and community leaders: For wisdom for national and local leaders (e.g., PM Holness and President Díaz-Canel), for transparent allocation of aid, and for policies that protect the vulnerable. 16

Scripture & short meditations

Psalms 46:1–3 (NIV): “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear… The nations are in uproar, the kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.”

Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God...”

Matthew 5:4: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

Use these verses to anchor your prayers: ask for God’s presence, courage, and comfort for those facing loss and uncertainty. Pray the Lord would open hearts for the gospel amid relief efforts.

Our Heavenly Father We come to You now on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti and all islands in Melissa’s path. You are our refuge and strength; we ask You to be a very present help in this hour of storm, flood, and fear. Protect lives, stabilize shelters, and surround every family with Your angels. Bring safety to the elderly, infants, those with disabilities, the poor, and to those who are alone. Lord, guide the leaders — Prime Minister Andrew Holness, President Miguel Díaz-Canel, local mayors, rescue commanders and faith leaders — grant them wisdom, clarity, and courage to act quickly and fairly. Protect rescue teams, medical workers, volunteers, and all who enter danger. Provide them with skill, endurance, and supernatural peace.  We ask for provision: food, clean water, power for hospitals, medicines, fuel, communication lines, and rapid repair of infrastructure. Where roads and bridges are damaged, provide creative and timely solutions for access and aid distribution. Lift up communities in Cuba who are already facing energy and supply shortages — do not let this storm compound their suffering. Father, we pray for spiritual awakening. Let this disaster be a moment when people encounter Christ — in shelter rooms, food lines, medical tents, and in the hands of those offering help. Bring many to repentance, faith, and peace. Let the church be bold, compassionate, and wise in the days ahead. For those who will lose houses, livelihoods, or loved ones, send Your comfort; be a close Father to the grieving. We ask for miraculous protection — that even where physical loss comes, lives are spared. We also pray for those traumatized by past shelter experiences who are reluctant to evacuate; give them courage and a safe place to go. In Jesus’ name we also ask for calm in the aftermath: for fair and generous international aid, for local churches and NGOs to coordinate well, and for lasting resilience to be built so communities are safer when the next storm threatens. Amen.
