The Ordinances of the Church
What are the two ordinances given to the church?
Lesson 24 of 28 • Print / save PDFThe church's ordinances are considered sacred practices that were established by Jesus Christ and are seen as necessary elements of discipleship and worship. It denotes a person's public statement of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior as well as their connection with His death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4).

A Christian is baptized by being submerged in water, signifying the forgiveness of sins and the beginning of a lifelong journey toward maturation in Christ (Matthew 3:16; Acts 8:38). A believer's path of faith and discipleship begins with baptism, which signifies their decision to follow Jesus Christ and live in accordance with His teachings.

Baptism is a gospel ordinance commemorating the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. In baptism public testimony is given to the effect that the one baptized has been crucified with Christ, buried with Him, and is raised with Him to walk in newness of life. Only one mode of baptism can rightly represent these facts of experience, and that is immersion,— the mode followed by Christ and the primitive church."— Id., p. 101.
